I'm Brittan, genuine Southern mama, and lover of all things pink! I'm somewhat OCD, always on the go, & I love Jesus with all my heart. Stick around and I hope you enjoy my babbling!
A while ago Lindsey wrote a post about telling people how much they mean to you before they are no longer around to hear it. I completely agree with her. Why do we wait to talk about how much someone means to us until after they have passed away? It really doesn't make much sense to me. This is why I'm sharing this with y'all today.
When I was 5 years old my mother married the man I call my dad {yes, like the Brad Paisley song. See below! :) }. I often refer to him as Alan on my blog, but only to avoid confusion, because my biological dad passed away a few years ago. My dad was a part of my life. We saw each other a few times a month, and we had a good relationship but it was more like a friendship. Nothing wrong with that. I love my dad very much but it's just a fact that I didn't live with him so he wasn't as much a part of my life as Alan was and is. This post is in no way meant to belittle my dad. He was an amazing artist and I miss him everyday. God just happened to bless me with two dads.
Alan has been there for me through everything. He raised me from the time I was five years old until, well I guess he's still raising me. :) He went to every dance recital, every school play, he took me the doctor and got me braces. He taught me right from wrong and showed me how to get along in this world. Even now, after I'm married and a parent myself, if I have a problem or if I'm just wanting to talk - he's the person I call. Most importantly, he's the person I WANT to call. He's everything to me. Absolutely everything. He accepted me into his life when he didn't have to. He could have called me his step-daughter and only done what he had to but that never entered his mind. When he introduces me to people, I'm his daughter, just like his other 2 biological daughters. I'm his daughter. If you say step-daughter, he will correct you. Because of him, I had a father/daughter relationship that I otherwise would have been lacking.
And now, he's my daughter's "Pop" and I thank God that she is getting to know my dad, the man that has made such a difference in my life.
Alan - DAD, I hope you know just how much you mean to me. I really do thank God that you are my dad. You are one of the best men I've ever known. Talking to you and spending time with you is one of my favorite things to do. I look forward to many more conversations, hugs, and time for you to spend with your granddaughter. Thank you for being the dad you didn't have to be. I love you. Love, Britt
If you haven't told that special person in your life how much you love them lately, go do it now. Life is short. :)
This reminds me of my "step dad", who was more like a dad to me when I was younger than my own :) My grandpa (who was also my mom's "step dad") used to tell us that the only steps in our family were the ones leading to and from the front door... he didn't believe in the word when it came to family. Hope you have a great day!
Having you as my youngest daughter means the world to me, Britt. You have made my life so much richer than it would have been without you in it. I love you with all my heart. Dad
oh my goodness, i'm crying like a baby over this post and then I saw your Dad's comment above me...flood gates. :) You are so sweet to recognize your relationship with your dad! I'm glad you have such a great relationship with him!
So sweet!! I have a step-dad too and the same relationship. I'm his daughter and it always makes my heart jump to hear him say that to people. With my parents divorce, I gained a second mom and a second dad and they are the most wonderful people in the world!
Reading your post and hearing the Brad Paisley song was so touching. I know Alan knows through your love and this post how much you appreciate and love him.
I also have a "didn't have to be" dad. I never knew my biological father but it never really mattered to me because I had a great man who wanted to be my dad. He took full responsibility for me and in return I have SO much repect for him!
I love this post so much, because it makes me think of how close I am with my dad and how much he means to me. And when I saw your dad's comment, my heart melted. Dads are so wonderful!

:) Wonderful post. And a great idea too. We all need to say it more often to those special people. You are a great writer too!
